Helical Pile Stamped Shop Drawings

A helical screw pile is constructed of helical-shaped circular steel plates that are welded to a steel shaft. The plates are constructed as a helix with a carefully controlled pitch, similar to the thread on a screw.

The pile type and helix diameter are chosen based on the bearing capacity of the soil and the load the rotary-installed steel pile is designed to support. The central shaft is used to transmit torque during installation and to transfer axial loads to the helical plates. The central shaft also provides most of the resistance to lateral loading.

The true helix on the helical pile allows it to be turned into the ground with impressive speed and accuracy and without the noise and vibrations associated with a pile driver. The addition of the helix also dramatically increases bearing capacity and up-lift resistance.

What Are Helical Piles?

Helical piles are large steel shafts twisted into deep stable soil conditions to provide maximum structural support and stability. They are installed by machine-driven, rotary hydraulic attachments and can be powered by either small or large excavators depending on the pile size. For grouted pile applications, a lead displacement plate is fitted onto shaft extensions, pushing soil out of the way as it’s being screwed into the ground, leaving room for concrete to follow. Helical piles offer numerous benefits, including year-round installation, long lifespan, and increased load capacities at an efficient cost.

The Function of Helical Piles

Helical piles can be used for both structural and non-structural applications. Structurally, helical piles are often used to provide foundation support for buildings and bridges, as well as retaining walls and other structures requiring deep foundation support. Non-structurally, they can be used in a wide range of projects, such as anchoring solar panel arrays, lighting towers or antennas, shade sails, temporary fencing/sound barriers, and many others. Helical piles work by transferring loads directly into stable soil with less disturbance than alternate methods such as driven piles or caissons. They also offer high load capacity with minimal noise output, making them an ideal solution for many construction projects.
